Buying Guide: How to Choose the Best Gaming Console for Seniors
Keep these factors in mind when shopping for the best gaming console for seniors.
Ease of use for beginners
Simple menus, motion controls and forgiving games make a big difference for new players. Nintendo consoles are the easiest to pick up. PlayStation and Xbox have more complex controllers but excellent accessibility settings, including button remapping and text size.
Couch and local multiplayer
Nintendo consoles have the most local split-screen and party games. Switch Joy-Con can be shared as two controllers for some games. PlayStation and Xbox need one controller per player, so budget for extra controllers.
Family settings and age ratings
Every current console has free parental controls for age ratings, spending limits, screen time and online chat. Set them up before you hand over the controller, and check the ESRB rating of each game.
Disc, digital and storage
Digital consoles cost less up front but only play downloads. Disc models let you buy, borrow and resell physical games. Big modern games take a lot of space, so plan for extra storage if you keep many installed at once.
Console setup tips
Get started right:
- Install system updates before the first game.
- Turn on the TV game mode and HDMI auto low latency.
- Set up parental controls and spending limits early.
- Add storage before your library outgrows the SSD.
