Buying Guide: How to Choose the Best Handheld for Cloud Gaming
Keep these factors in mind when shopping for the best handheld for cloud gaming.
Cloud gaming and streaming basics
Cloud gaming runs games on remote servers and streams the video to your handheld, so the device itself does not need to be powerful. You need a fast, stable connection; 5GHz Wi-Fi close to your router works best. Remote Play streams from your own console at home instead of a data center.
Screen size, refresh rate and OLED
Larger 8-inch screens show more detail but make the device heavier. 120Hz or 144Hz screens feel smoother in fast games. OLED screens show deeper blacks and richer color, which suits dark games and long play sessions.
Battery life in the real world
Battery life depends far more on the game than on the battery size. Demanding PC games can drain a handheld in one to two hours, while indie games, retro games and streaming can last much longer. Lower brightness, frame-rate caps and power modes help.
Which kind of handheld do you need?
Nintendo Switch 2 plays Nintendo games and is the simplest to use. Windows handhelds like the ROG Xbox Ally and Legion Go 2 run PC stores such as Steam and the Xbox app. SteamOS handhelds like the Steam Deck focus on your Steam library. Android handhelds run Android games, streaming apps and emulators. Remote players like PlayStation Portal stream games from your console or the cloud.
Cloud gaming tips
Stream smoothly:
- Use 5GHz Wi-Fi and sit close to the router.
- Close downloads on other devices while you play.
- Pick games that are less sensitive to lag, like RPGs.
- Use a wired connection for your home console when using Remote Play.
